The Robins wasted a plethora of chances to see off Morecambe on Saturday amid an otherwise excellent display and had to settle for a point in a 1-1 draw, which leaves the club still just three points outside the play-off places.
And Yates is hoping his charges can find that mean streak to capitalise on an upcoming sequence of six home games from their next seven fixtures over what will be a pivotal four-week period.
"Some of our approach play, passing and movement (against Morecambe) was really top drawer, the only thing that was missing was the final touch," he said. "We just needed to be a bit more ruthless and put the ball into the back of the net."
Town have failed to shine on more than one occasion at Whaddon Road this term, and Yates added: "We`ve got a lot of home games coming up so we have to make sure we are better at home and we need the crowd to stay with us and stay patient.
"People are probably expecting us to win. It doesn`t work like that but we`ll do everything we can to make sure we do."
