Boston United's week of upheaval ended with defeat at fast improving Cheltenham Town in this Division Three encounter.

The Pilgrims were taken over in midweek and new owner John Sotnick wasted no time in sacking manager Neil Thompson and chief executive David Pickett.

Caretaker-manager Jim Rodwell was placed in charge for this game and his team battled hard without carrying a potent attacking threat to the Cheltenham goal.

The home side, meanwhile, have improved beyond all recognition under the leadership of John Ward and have now taken ten points from their last four games lifting them up to 13th in the table and clear of the intensifying relegation scrap.

Rodwell had been given virtually no time to prepare his team but they turned in a hard-working, well organised performance making it difficult for Cheltenham to break them down.

Boston went close through veteran midfielder Neil Redfearn at the start of each half but the better chances fell to Cheltenham.

Defender Jamie Victory had the ball in the net with a first half header only to see his effort ruled out for a foul, and busy striker Paul Brayson saw a shot touched over the bar by Boston goalkeeper Paul Bastock.

The long-serving Boston keeper saved well from Grant McCann but he was powerless to prevent central defender John Brough from heading the only goal in the 62nd minute. Cheltenham had kept the ball from a short corner routine, Karl Henry supplying Martin Devaney down the right and his cross was headed in by Brough at the far post.

Cheltenham captain John Finnigan almost doubled the advantage late in the game when his 25-yard shot smacked the crossbar.

Cheltenham manager John Ward said: "We've had a fantastic week, working hard and getting points, and I'm delighted with the way the lads have gone about their work.

"That win will do us a power of good on the back of our previous good results as well." Rodwell added: "I can't fault any of the players for attitude, effort and commitment. It's been a difficult week but it's still a football match and that doesn't change. What the future holds for us I don't know but our immediate task is to improve the league position as quickly as we can."
