If both of these teams want to challenge for promotion they had better look seriously at their defences.
This was a typical third division game with plenty of Sunday League moments.
Hull did all the pressing in the opening moments, and after seven minutes Steve Book was forced to make an excellent save at Danny Allsopp's feet.
A minute later Stuart Elliott rose above Book and nodded in from six yards out after a well-positioned flicked header by Damien Delaney.
Just after the half-hour mark Hull conceded a soft goal as the unmarked Damian Spencer rounded Paul Musselwhite and shot into an empty net.
Then Spencer, on the edge of the area, appeared to kick out at Tigers defender Richard Hinds. The referee had a long discussion with his linesman and Spencer got away with a yellow card.
But in the 40th minute, after a good move started by Kevin Amankwaah who put the ball to the unmarked Graham Fyfe, Spencer deflected the shot past a stunned Musselwhite.
Minutes later the home crowd was stunned when Cheltenham went two goals ahead after a dreadful clearance by Musselwhite. It went straight into the path of Spencer who accepted the gift gratefully and slammed it past him into the net.
Three minutes before the break in another frenetic period in Cheltenham's box, Jason Price sneaked in at the far post to bring Hull back into the game.
After the restart Allsopp ran clear and thudded a shot across the bar, and just a minute later a good turn by Price just outside the area allowed him to slot the ball to Allsopp, who kept his cool and fired a shot past Book from 18 yards to bring the hosts level.
In the 61st minute substitute Bob Taylor, the veteran loanee from West Brom, hit the side-netting seconds after coming on.
Three minutes from time Hull missed out on a late winner when Price's header was hacked off the line by Fyfe.
