Wycombe scraped a point against Cheltenham in a 1-1 draw, which the visitors will feel they had done enough to win.
The home side started the stronger and went ahead after just four minutes. Skipper Keith Ryan chasing a long ball was tripped by Michael Duff, allowing Steve Brown to score his fifth goal of the season from the penalty spot.
Visiting skipper Mark Yates brilliantly headed a Roger Johnson shot over the bar four minutes later, before Cheltenham started to find their feet. Yates popped up at the other end, ghosting onto a right wing cross before heading just wide, and with five minutes left in a end-to-end first half, on loan Marvin Brown bought the best out of home keeper Frank Talia, with a long-range strike.
The visitors continued to dominate after the break and on 74 minutes Jamie Victory was played in on the left, but substitute Damian Spencer failed to connect with the cross his from two yards out.
A minute later Talia was called on to make another save, when Victory had a clear sight of goal but shot straight at the home custodian from 12 yards.
Cheltenham got their deserved equaliser on 89 minutes when Tony Naylor finished well from ten yards after Yates' cross had caused panic in the home defence.
"Everyone can see that the confidence is wafer thin here at the moment, and although we started really well in the first 10 minutes, we weren't able to sustain too much for the remainder of the game," said Chairboys boss Lawrie Sanchez. "It was a bitter blow for them to score with just two minutes left on the clock, as I really thought we would hang on to take all three points. "We now have to pick ourselves up and go to Port Vale on Monday and make sure that we can take something from that game and then there will be no doubt about us remaining clear of the relegation area."
