York City crashed to a 2-0 home defeat against Cheltenham Town and following the other results in the division they will now need to show promotion form to maintain league status.
Cheltenham have now recorded victories on each of their four visits to York City, the club where Robins boss John Ward started his managerial career.
The first half provided few opportunities for either side with visitors Cheltenham being limited to a couple of long range efforts from Grant McCann.
On the half hour York almost went ahead when Richard Hope met Darren Dunning's corner with a firm downward header but keeper Shane Higgs dived to his left top block the effort.
Wood later set up Darren Edmondson and the wing back cut inside but shot straight at the keeper. Then in stoppage time Lee Nogan missed the Minstermen's best opportunity.
Edmondson found Dunning in space on the left and his fine cross was headed wide by the sides top scorer from six yards out.
City player boss Chris Brass was injured in the first period following a heavy challenge from John Finnigan. Although he re-appeared after the break he lasted only five minutes before being replaced by Mitch Ward. Once Brass left the park City lost all cohesion and confidence.
Disaster struck for the home side just before the hour when Cheltenham scored. City had three players on or near the goalline with time and space to clear a loose ball from a Cheltenham corner. Nogan swung his left leg in an attempt to clear but his effort spun backwards high into the roof of the City net.
City failed to make any serious threat on the visitors goal after falling behind. At the other end Cheltenham striker Paul Brayson fired in four goalbound shots, three being well saved by Mark Ovendale and defender Chris Smith making the vital block with the other.
Matters became worse in stoppage time, when keeper Ovendale brought Brayson down in the box and the referee awarded a penalty.
Ovendale was red carded for his offence and with all substitutes used, defender Edmondson went in goal, Brayson scored with ease from the spot leaving City hanging on by a thread to their league status.
